Neuroscience Concepts Changed Teachers’ Views of Pedagogy and Students

Advances in neuroscience reveal how individual brains change as learning occurs. Translating this neuroscience into practice has largely been unidirectional, from researchers to teachers. However, how teachers view and incorporate neuroscience ideas in their classroom practices remains relatively unexplored. Previously fourteen non-science teachers participated in a 3-week three credit graduate course focusing on foundational ideas in neuroscience. The current work was undertaken to gain insight into if and how individual teachers choose to later apply the proposed set of educational neuroscience concepts (ENCs) in their classrooms. This qualitative follow-up study examined commonalities in how teachers of diverse ages and subjects utilized their new neuroscience understandings. To this end, a year after the course, all participants assessed their perceived usefulness of the ENCs in a survey.

The survey revealed that irrespective of subject areas or grade levels taught, teachers found the ENCs useful as organizing principles for their pedagogy now and in the future. Overall teachers estimated that the ENCs’ influence on lesson design had increased from 51% prior to the course to an estimated 90% for future lessons.

Sitting for Hours May Shrink the Brain

Prolonged sedentary behavior in adults over 50 is linked to cognitive decline and brain shrinkage in regions vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease. Even among those who exercise regularly, spending more time sitting was associated with worse cognitive outcomes.

The effect was strongest in individuals carrying the APOE-e4 gene, a major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s. These findings suggest that breaking up sedentary time throughout the day may be a key strategy for protecting brain health and reducing Alzheimer’s risk, especially in genetically vulnerable individuals.

After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. Why?

In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this “great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children’s social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. The beauty of diversity

Perspectives are different. Ways of doing things are different.

Duolingo CEO says AI is a better teacher than humans—but schools will still exist ‘because you still need childcare’

Language-learning app Duolingo has been leaning heavily into AI. The company with an owl mascot temporarily replaced its CEO with an AI avatar on an earnings call last year—and evenmore controversially, it announced last month it would permanently replace its contract workers with AI.

Now the company has much broader ambitions. With a community of 116 million users a month, Duolingo has amassed loads of data about how people learn, accumulating tricks to keep learners engaged over the long term and even know how well a student will score on a test before they take it. According to founder and CEO Luis von Ahn, AI’s ability to individualize learning will lead to most teaching being done by computers in the next few decades.

“Ultimately, I’m not sure that there’s anything computers can’t really teach you,” von Ahn said on the No Priors podcast recently.

He predicted education would radically change, because “it’s just a lot more scalable to teach with AI than with teachers.”

“By the way, that doesn’t mean the teachers are going to go away, you still need people to take care of the students,” he added. “I also don’t think schools are going to go away, because you still need childcare.”
