A Shaikh told me something very powerful today.

He said with even a small amount of knowledge, you can make a big impact if you are grounded in tassawuf and properly purifying yourself. He said that Imam Abu Hanifa studied loads of fiqh for decades of his life, but he also spent 2 years with Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq, who was his Shaikh in tasawwuf. Imam Abu Hanifa said that if it were not for those two years, he would have been completely destroyed.

This is this is the way of tasawwuf. If it is properly studied, it can make someone who knows even a little benefit people a lot. And if it is not properly studied, it can make someone who even knows a lot of the other sciences destroy themselves with that knowledge as it can be used to benefit their ego and not for Allah.

Three types of people

1. Aalim(Scholar)
2. Aabid(Worshipper)
3. Aarif(Knower of God)

The scholar inherits the words of the Prophet ﷺ with sincerity.

The worshipper inherits the acts of the Prophet ﷺ with fasting and praying with outward mujahada.

The knower takes first from knowledge. Then he puts it into action in a complete state.(I.e. Combines being an Aalim and Aabid). Then he adds onto that with good character and asceticism(zuhd) and waraa and hope(of God’s mercy) and fear(of his wrath).
