A band 9 response to 14th June PBI exam:

Some people argue that governments should focus on domestic matters, while others believe that addressing global issues is more important.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The question of whether governments should focus on internal issues or attempt to address global problems has been a matter of contention. While tackling international issues is critical, I assert that governments must first meet domestic needs.

Global issues like environmental degradation or global poverty cannot be addressed by a single nation, thereby requiring collaborative efforts. With more countries working in cooperation, these problems can be resolved quickly and efficiently. This is because while some nations offer resources such as human capital and natural resources, they often lack strategic foresight, which can be provided by some others. These collaborative endeavors were fundamental in combating global tensions like alleviating air pollution in Delhi- the capital of India-, and reducing poverty-afflicted population in underdeveloped parts of Malaysia. Humanitarian assistance by both Asian and European countries proved much more effective rather than a single government alone.

In my view, domestic issues should nevertheless be prioritized over global assistance. This is because without addressing domestic needs, governments can hardly contribute positively to international prosperity. These internal needs might include the lack of access to clean water, poor education, or inadequate infrastructure. Governing bodies therefore must meet the population’s basic needs to ensure public content over assistance policies. Once governments closed the gaps in education and wealth, they would contribute more meaningfully to global community. This notion is compellingly demonstrated by Germany, a country that consistently takes the lead in tackling issues in developing nations largely due to public conformity.

Equally essential is national prosperity. Although countries benefit greatly from assisting other countries, over-assistance hinders national progression. Too much focus on humanitarian relief not only does put a strain on the budget, but also redirects capital from essential public services like healthcare and education. This policy, thus, results in social regression and overwhelmingly negative public reaction. The financial assistance of US government to Israel during the Israel-Palestine conflict exemplifies this, with nationals expressing their negative sentiments over financial aid when domestic issues like unemployment and homelessness were urgent.

In conclusion, global assistance is a complex phenomenon with both benefits and drawbacks. While acknowledging advantages like enhanced assistance, I contend governments have to address internal needs first to better serve the public as well as ensuring long-term national prosperity.
