​​BESIDE OR BESIDES?

These two prepositions are easy to mix up (спутать), but they have absolutely opposite meanings. Let’s clear up (проясним) some things!

🔹BESIDE (synonym - next to) – рядом, около

▫️Can you see me? I’m staying beside the bank and waving a hand.
▫️Ты видишь меня? Я стою возле банка и машу рукой.

🔹BESIDES (synonyms - in addition to, moreover) – не считая; помимо; кстати; кроме того

▫️The book is very interesting. Besides, it was written by a famous author.
▫️Книга очень интересна. Кроме того, она была написана известным автором.

1. To be beside the point – речь не о том сейчас, не суть важно.

▫️It’s good that you graduated from University with honors, but that is beside the point. It’s more important where you’re gonna work.

2. To be beside yourself – быть вне себя (от гнева, радости, горя).

🔹COME DOWN WITH /kʌm daʊn wɪð/ phrasal verb

- заболеть, слечь (с какой-то болезнью)

Synonyms - to become sick, to fall ill

▫️In spite of the fact that people come down with pneumonia, doctors still diagnose it as coronavirus.
