FC Bayern München v Real Madrid: Semi-final First Leg - UEFA Champions League 2023/24 Photo by James Gill - Danehouse/Getty Images It was a good day at the office for the Bavarians. Bayern Munich notched a neat feat against Real Madrid in the home leg of its Champions League semifinals tie, which ended in a 2-2 draw.Despite the scoreline, the Bavarians had the upper hand for large spells of the game and will be disappointed to come away without a larger advantage. However, one stat they will not be unhappy with is the precision of their passing on the day: at 93.7%, 520 completed out of 555 attempts, Bayern reached rarefied air. From Sofascore, via @iMiaSanMia:Bayern's 93.7% passing accuracy (520/555) recorded against Real Madrid tonight is the highest passing accuracy by one team in a single Champions League knockout stage match over the last nine seasons [@SofascoreINT] pic.twitter.com/OXsJ0NAsyc— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) April 30, 2024Who were the key distributors on the night for Bayern? Eric Dier led the way with 79/82, as expected of a ball-playing center-back. Next highest in volume was Konrad Laimer, who completed 76 out of 78 attempts while pulling the strings in midfield. Center-back partner Kim Min-jae followed, at 72/74.Of course, accuracy is not everything. But Bayern balanced control and creativity to expertly handle the first leg of this tie. It is now all to play for in Madrid in a week’s time.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s insane 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in the Champions League? Austria v Turkiye - International Friendly 0 for 3...but fans won’t mind this one. Yes, you read that right — Ralf Rangnick has rejected Bayern Munich and will not take over the club next season.Over the past week, a flurry of rumors confirmed by public statements from board members and Rangnick himself indicated that both parties were very close to an agreement for Rangnick to become the next head coach of Bayern Munich. Fortunately, it will no longer be the case after the ÖFB (Austrian Football Association) confirmed the report by Sport Bild’s Christian Falk, officially stating that Rangnick will remain manager of the Austrian national team.Ralf Rangnick bleibt Teamchef des Nationalteams! Wir haben noch viel vor! #GemeinsamÖSTERREICH pic.twitter.com/7sVzkh0aAB— ÖFB - oefb.at (@oefb1904) May 2, 2024According to Tz’s Philipp Kessler, Rangnick had informed Bayern of his decision yesterday.Commenting on the reasons for his decision, Rangnick said, “I’m the Austrian team coach with all my heart. I really enjoy this task and am determined to successfully continue on our chosen path. I would like to expressly emphasize that this is not a rejection of FC Bayern, but rather a decision for my team and our common goals. Our full concentration is on the Euros. We will do everything we can to get as far as possible.” (via @iMiaSanMia)A report by Sport Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl and Christian Falk further explains the reasons for Rangnick’s refusal:Ralf Rangnick didn’t want to completely change his current life. That includes the fact that he didn’t want to do two jobs at the same time right now, like planning the Bayern squad, while he’s on the Euros with Austria. Rangnick knows what it means to coach a top club with all the pressure that comes with it. At his age, this is unimaginable for him.BFW AnalysisThis worked out on its own. This is the best scenario for both sides, as Rangnick — despite being a legend of the game has shown with his stint at Manchester United that he is clearly not in touch with modern club football. He’s done a great job coaching the Austrian team in a far less public environment and surely their team will go far in the Euros. For Bayern, this is more a blessing than a blow. With Finale Dahoam coming up next season, the club needs a competitive, tactically sound, and winning coach with good experience at a club of Bayern’s magnitude, and Rangnick didn’t fit the brief. The fact that Bayern even considered it to this extent shows a lack of ambition...but also the stale coaching market. Some fans are certainly happy this fell through, but that begs the question — who will be Bayern Munich’s next coach? Zinedine Zidane? Thomas Tuchel gets to stay? Hansi Flick? Ruben Amorim? Jose Mourinho? This comes as the third rejection for Bayern in their search for Tuchel’s successor. I guess you could say Harry Kane isn’t the only one scoring hattricks.Jokes aside, Bayern needs to reassess their options — and that includes reconsidering keeping one of the world’s best knockout coaches at the club.

Germany v Japan - International Friendly Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images Where will the sextuple winner end up? Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona both seemed like clubs where Hansi Flick’s coaching style might be a fit. Through the magic of modern football, though, both of those clubs appear to be set with their coaching selections for next season. After initially announcing he was out, Xavi will return to Barca next season. What will Flick do? Well, per Sky Sport, Flick will look for a new gig abroad: Hansi Flick is still planning to work abroad, even after the Barcelona job became unavailable. A return to FC Bayern is not an option as things stand. The pickings for Flick, appear to be very slim at this stage. The recent news that Ralf Rangnick rejected a move to Bayern Munich could — maybe — persuade the Bavarians to look to their old coach once more, but it remains to be seen how the Bavarians react to the most recent miss at bringing in a coach to replace Thomas Tuchel. RB Leipzig v Borussia Dortmund - Bundesliga Photo by Luciano Lima/Getty Images Him, too? RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose has seen the chaos of Bayern Munich’s coaching carousel and knows one thing — he wants no part of that mess. When asked if he would pick up the phone if Max Eberl called, Rose had an interesting reply. “When Max calls, I always answer. Then I ask him how it’s going, what things look like at Tegernsee, wish him all the best and hope that we’ll see each other again soon,” Rose said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I think FC Bayern are coping quite well without Marco Rose. Sometimes there are situations in football that are a bit tricky. The market in which we are talking about FC Bayern is not that simple. Nevertheless, I’m certain they will find a good solution.”Okay, well strike that name off the list, too. Unfortunately, this whole circus is making Bayern Munich a punchline...dead in the middle of attempting to make the Champions League finale. TSG Hoffenheim v VfB Stuttgart - Bundesliga Photo by Daniel Kopatsch/Getty Images We’re not gonna get anyone, are we? The Bayern Munich job is supposed to be one of the biggest jobs in world football. Such an enticing job that anyone would jump for once they were offered the position. That is unfortunately not the case as multiple coaches have rejected the chance to manage the six-time Champions League winners, with Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß the next person to slam the door on the Rekordmeister.“I’ve already been asked about that, but nothing has changed,” Hoeneß said (Bild as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “FC Bayern is an exceptional club, they will certainly find a good solution.” That sounds like the meme where the boss is asking for more guys to chip in but the response he got was “good luck with that.”Some of the candidates remaining on the market (who are either not looked at or have not outright turned down Bayern’s approaches) are Ruben Amorim (who ended up not going to Liverpool FC), Jose Mourinho, Zinedine Zidane, and Roberto De Zerbi.
