WhatsApp has informed the Delhi High Court that if it is forced to weaken its encryption, it will stop operating in India since it would be against user privacy.
According to media reports, The company's lawyer emphasized, "As a platform, we are saying, if we are told to break encryption, then WhatsApp goes."
The statement comes amid challenges to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 demanding traceability of messages, which WhatsApp argues infringes on privacy rights protected under the Indian Constitution.
The lawyer said people use WhatsApp-which has more than 400 million users in India-largely because of its privacy features.
